This photographic survey and the film I am currently making from it, concerns the landscape content of the 15th Century Venetian painting, 'St Francis in Ecstasy by Giovanni Bellini'

My interest in where the landscape imagery within this Renaissance painting came from, began when I wrote my undergraduate thesis on the development of the landscape genre in the work of Giovanni Bellini. I researched the possibility that Bellini’s process of conceiving landscape imagery in his religious painting, may have involved a number of visual methodologies, including journeys to landscapes outside of Venice to gather landscape content for his painting.

The act of tracing these journeys and photographing the following landscape sites supports my argument with primary evidence that there is a direct link between Bellini's pictorial imagery and a number of specific landscapes in Italy. View the survey and view the accompanying film in progress to learn more.
